Newcomb, NY. George H. Canon 78 passed away early Sunday morning June, 18 2017 at the Glens Falls Hospital, with his loving family by his side.
George was born November 11, 1938 in Indian Lake NY, the son of the Late Alfred and Nettie Walton Canon, parents who were very proud of their son's accomplishments in life.
Beside his parents George was predeceased by his first wife Gertrude Morehouse Canon, and his brothers William, Dwight and Alfred Canon.
George graduated as Valvictorian of his class at Newcomb Central School in 1957, this was his 60th anniversary as an alumni. He was also a graduate of Albany Business College.
George has been married to Monica Young since 2014.
George, sometimes referred to as the "Godfather of preserving many Historic places in the Adirondacks" was very active politically both locally and Statewide. He was a former councilman for the Town of Newcomb, a long time Supervisor for the Town of Newcomb and the Essex County Board of Supervisors where he served a two year term as Chairman, he was president of the New York State Association of Towns, The Adirondack Association of Towns and Villages, a member of the Adirondack Park Local Government Review Board, a member of the AARCH Board of Directors and represented Essex County on the Off Track Betting Board of Directors where he served as Secretary. And as George would say, "not bad for a guy who grew up on dirt floors in a tar paper shack".
George was a charter and 50 year member of the Town of Newcomb Lions Club, a former member of the Newcomb Volunteer Fire Department, a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles #2486 of South Glens Falls, a member of the Gooley Club, the Newcomb Sportsman Club, the Sanford Lake Rod and Gun Club and a former trapper, hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed golf and was responsible for the construction of the High Peaks Golf Course in Newcomb.
George was unique individual, you always knew exactly where he stood, if he liked you, you knew it, and if he didn't you knew that also. He had friends everywhere and from all walks of life. He loved meeting people and he loved the Town of Newcomb., and did everything he possibly could for the people who live there.
Besides his wife Monica, George is survived by Brad (Chris) Canon of Tupper Lake, Charlene (James ) Gibb of Chestertown, Charles Canon of Newcomb, Diana Canon of Glens Falls , his step daughters, Consuelo (Alvin) Davis of Glens Falls, Melissa McDougall of Chesapeake, Va., and Chief Petty Officer SabraRenee (Josh) Arnold stationed in Falls Church Va., his sisters Annie Canon and Anne Pecor of Rochester, NY, and Kathryn Canon of Bennington, Vt., his very close friends, Lowell and Linda Stringer, Robert "Red" Winslow, Charlie Stickney and several Grandchildren great Grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to thank Jean VanAuken, Doctors Sponzo and Pillmer and the staff at the Oncology unit at Glens Falls Hospital for the wonderful and caring services offered to George over the years.
A memorial service will be held Saturday afternoon, July 1, 2017 at 3:00 PM at the Newcomb Central School, Newcomb, NY.
Friends may call at the school Saturday from 1:00 PM until the time of the service at 3:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials take the form of donations to the Newcomb Fire and Rescue Squad, the Newcomb Lions Club or the Newcomb United Methodist Church, Newcomb, NY 12852.
