George Earl FennessyNewcomb; George Earl Fennessy 87, met his Lord and Savior Tuesday morning January 21, 2014 at his home with his loving family at his side.
George was born November 12, 1926 in Newcomb, he was the son of the late James and Myrtle LaPrarie Fennessy.
George was predeceased by his sister Jeanne B. Stringer and his brothers Lowell and James Fennessy.
George enlisted in the US Navy Oct. 18, 1944. He received the American Theatre of War medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theatre of War Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He served aboard the USS Webster and The USS Bataan. He was honorably discharged May 6, 1946 as a Seaman First Class. George was a member of the American Legion for 66 Years.
George was a member of Local 106 Operating Engineers Albany, NY for 36 years, he retired in 1988.
George proudly served as a Newcomb Town Councilman for 20 years. He was influential in the Newcomb landfill closure, saving Camp Santanoni, additions to the Town Hall, acquisition of the Newcomb Historical Society Building, construction and operation of the Newcomb Golf Course, improvements to the Newcomb Health Center and participated in several other issues.
George loved life. His passions in life were fishing, hunting, trapping and rabbit hunting with his beagles. He enjoyed being a member of the Kempshall Mountain Club and smoking trout and venison. .
Survivors include his wife of 61years Elizabeth Anderson Fennessy, his daughter Lana Fennessy both of Newcomb and his 2 nieces and 5 nephews.
George requested that there be no viewing hours or funeral service, a grave side service will be held at St. Therese Cemetery at a date to be announced in the spring.
The family requests that memorials for George take the form of donations to the Newcomb Rescue Squad, Newcomb, NY 12852.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Edward L. Kelly Funeral Home Schroon Lake.
