Newcomb: Sally Rockwood, 81, of Newcomb passed away in the presence of her husband of 61 years, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born November 27, 1942, in Tahawus. She was proud to have been the first baby born in that community to Norman (Bill) and Ella (Welch) Moses. She was one of six children. Sally graduated from Newcomb Central School in 1961. She married Kenneth (KC) Rockwood, who was the love of her life in October of 1962. She and KC started their family shortly after with the birth of their first daughter, Lynn. Another daughter, Lori, was born 20 months later.
Sally was noted for her selfless acts of service, some of which included: Volunteering for the Newcomb Fire Department and Lions Club, putting in hours for many events occurring each year; being point contact at the Newcomb Welcome Center; maintaining the town Memory Garden; placing Veteran’s flags on the cemetery; and participating in Wreaths Across America. She made herself available to anyone who needed assistance if they had a death in their family or were sick themselves. She was a Hospice volunteer. She served on the Board of Elections as well. One of her greatest accomplishments, that she was so proud of, was obtaining EMT certification, at approximately 50 years of age, which she used while serving on the Newcomb Rescue Squad.
Some of the things she loved included: Going to the ocean, floating on Lake Harris in the bay, bon fires by the lake, jeep rides with her husband, baking, gardening, family gatherings and forcing her daughters to stop alongside the road to pick through rocks and pinecones.
Sally is predeceased by her parents, her sister Patricia Poulton (Harry), her twin brothers Mitchell and Michael and her baby brother Peter. Left to cherish her memory are her husband KC, her daughters Lynn Mulcahy (Kevin), Lori DeMars (Cliff), her beloved grandchildren Alex (Niki) Garrido, Ericka DeMars and Shannon Mulcahy, her brother David Moses, her sister-in-law Dorothy Moses, and great-grandchildren Aryanna and Casey.
Friends may call on Sally’s family from 5 pm to 7pm, January 18th at the Edward L. Kelly Funeral home in Schroon Lake, with a celebration of her life immediately following. The family will set up a scholarship in her name for students of Newcomb Central School who share her love of volunteerism and community service. Details will be shared once the fund has been set up.
