Donald J. Sharlan

July 16, 1923 ~ February 4, 2015 (age 91)
Schroon Lake, Donald J. Sharlan, 91 passed away Wednesday evening at the Indian River Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Granville, NY after an extended illness.
Donald was born July 16, 1923 in Malone, NY the son of the late Henry and Beatrice Menard Sharlan.
Donald graduated from Franklin Academy in Malone and the New York State Maritime Academy at Fort Schuyler, NY. Upon graduation from Fort Schuyler, he was commissioned as an ensign in the USNR and the US Merchant Marine. He served two years of active duty with the US Merchant Marine and retired as a Lieutenant of the USNR with 22 years of service. At this time, he had a position waiting for him in the New York City office of Gulf Oil Corporation where he worked until retirement, when he moved to Schroon Lake.
Don was a member of the Town of Schroon Lions Club and a recipient of two distinguished service awards from the International Lions Club.
He had been a Life member and Vice Commander of the Schroon Lake VFW Post #362 and Commander of the Schroon Lake American Legion Post #982.
He had been a Life Member of the New York State Maritime College Alumni Association and a member of the Military Officers Association of America.
He was a Parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church.
He served as an Assessor for the Town of Schroon for 13 years, a volunteer for the Road to Recovery Program, a Committee member for establishing the Veterans Memorial in the Schroon Lake Park, and a committee member for the Essex County Veterans Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife Maxine of Schroon Lake, a daughter Barbara of Queensbury, and a sister Joyce of Malone.
He was predeceased by a brother, Henry of Massena and a daughter, Pamela of New York City.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered Monday February 9, 2015 at 12 noon at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Schroon Lake, by the Rev. Kevin McEwan pastor. Interment will be in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in the spring.
Friends may call at the Edward L. Kelly Funeral Home Sunday February 8, 2015 from 2:00 PM till 4:00 PM.
The family suggests that memorials take the form of donations to The Schroon Lake Veterans Memorial Fund or the Schroon Lake Emergency Squad, Schroon Lake, NY 12870.
