Alan Van Auken Obituary

Alan J. Van Auken: We regret to announce the passing of Alan J Van Auken, age 83, on Friday, November 15, 2024, in Saratoga Springs.

He was born on June 16th, 1941, to Roscoe and Muriel (Barss) Van Auken of Swaggertown Road, Scotia, NY.

He attended Scotia-Glendale High School and upon graduation enlisted in the Army. There he served in the Signal Corps gaining the rank of Sargent while serving overseas in Germany. Upon his honorable discharge, Alan took a job with New York State Department of Transportation as a field Inspecter for road and bridge construction throughout the North County until his retirement.

Alan and Edna Mae Gibbs married and lived in Newcomb, NY with her two daughters and two sons, while adding three more sons to the family along the way. While living in Newcomb, Alan was a member of the Lion’s Club and the Fire Department.

In his free time, Alan was an avid hunter and all-around outdoorsman. He enjoyed camping, canoeing, fishing and did a fair bit of RV traveling after retirement. He enjoyed following many aspects of ten grandchildren and later watching several great-grandchildren run about at family events.

Alan is survived by Edna Van Auken, Debbie (Welch) Muscatello, Donna (Welch) Bureau, Robert Welch and Steve Welch, Eric Van Auken, Kirk Van Auken, and Scott Van Auken, grandchildren Corey, Brendon, Katelyn, Cameron, Jason, Danny, Jay, Amanda, Chris, and Ruby, as well as eight great-grandchildren. In addition, he is survived by his brother, Bruce Van Auken, and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

The family will be holding a private service for family and friends.
