Schroon Lake; Jean L. Hall passed away peacefully in her home Sunday June 28, 2015, surrounded by family. Jean was born August 8, 1916 in Olmstedville, NY the daughter of the late John H. and Elizabeth Talbot Sullivan. Jean was predeceased by her husband Harrison, her infant daughter Ellen and daughter Virginia.
Jean attended school in Olmstedville, graduated as salutatorian of her class. She entered Hunter College in New York City but returned home early to take care of family. She enjoyed rural life and has shared many early memories with her family. She met her husband, Harrison Hall of Newcomb and was married in 1940. She remained in Olmstedville with her parents while Harrison served as a Seabee in the South Pacific. Upon his return they settled in Schroon Lake to raise their family. Jean worked as a teacher's enjoyed s aide in Schroon Lake Central School for many years and earned the respect and admiration of students and teachers alike. For years after her retirement former students would approach her or her children and relate how much they appreciated her kindness and help. She enjoyed serving as a "Brownie" leader after school and was very active in her church, Our Lady of Lourdes, especially when acting as a catechist instructing entering parishioners. She was a woman who lived her deep religious faith and taught her children by example, but she was not above giving out firm advice when one or another needed more than an example. After retirement Jean and Harrison moved to Florida, returning to Schroon Lake for months in the summer. Harrison's illness brought them back to Schroon Lake until his death in 1993.
Jean treasured the memories of her two trips to Ireland with several Sullivan family members and loved the many visits from grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They in turn delighted when Jean would play the organ for them. In her 98th year her musical ability remained, but she sometimes complained that it was difficult to span an octave with "recalcitrant old fingers".
Jean is dearly missed by her surviving family, her son Michael, her daughters Anne, Mary and Elizabeth, her sister Betty and 19 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.
A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Friday July 3, 2015 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Schroon Lake, the Rev Kevin McEwan officiating. Interment will take place in the Federal Flats Cemetery in Olmstedville at the convenience of the family.
