Joanne Gertrude Treffs was born October 28, 1936 at Jamaica Hospital in Queens New York. Her parents, Andrew Treffs and Anna Hoffman Treffs and began trips to Schroon Lake in 1938 and moved the family from Glendale Queens to Schroon Lake in 1945 before Joanne turned 9. The Treffs lived on Charley Hill Road from then forward. In her Twenties moved out west to Arizona where she earned a BS from the University of Arizona at Flagstaff in 1964. In 1971 she moved back to Schroon Lake and built a home in Charley Hill Road across from her family home where she lived until her death. During five of her any years in Schroon Lake, Joanne was a restaurateur, opening and functioning as "owner, chef, and chief bottle washer" of the Barn Restaurant. Additionally, she built and sold homes and cabins, authored two books , and was instrumental in renovating the South Schroon Cemetery. Her love of nature was a thread that ran throughout her life. Joanne's older brother, David Treffs survives her and lives in Massachusetts.
