Adirondack: John Cain passed away in his home on November 2, 2024, at the age of 93. He was predeceased by his wife of seventy years, Pat Cain. He is lovingly remembered by his seven children: John (Jeanne) and Tommy (Maryellen). Patricia (Walter), Barbara (Michael), Richard (Diane), Joseph (Michele), and predeceased by his son, James. He was adored by his 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, who knew him as their strong and loving Grandpa.
John served his country in the United States Navy from 1951-1953 during the Korean War. A few years later, he would again serve his country as a merchant marine. John was the chief engineer aboard the Training Vessel Kings Pointer III and Kings Pointer IV. His career at the United States Merchant Marine Academy spanned almost four decades. Over that time, he instructed and taught countless young engineering students the art of being an engineer and ship systems. John was admired by his colleagues and considered to be one of the smartest engineers on campus. In his spare time, John joined the bowling team and won countless trophies for his superior bowling abilities. John and Pat were also active members of the Officers Club at the United States Merchant Marine Academy and were spotted together at every event.
John and Pat began spending time in the Adirondacks in the 1950s, eventually buying property and making them one of the original plank owners of Blue-Sky Estates Association. Together, John and Pat officially moved to Adirondack, NY in 1998. During the summer months John could be found out on the water. Whether it was fishing, going for a boat ride, or even just fixing the docks, John loved the water. John enjoyed the winter months where he eagerly waited for snow so he could pull out his ATV to plow any driveway he could. When the lake would freeze over, you could find him trying to catch “the big one” in his ice fishing hut with his best friend, Jim Harris. Many lifelong friends and neighbors will dearly miss him.
