Joseph Provoncha Obituary

North Hudson: Joseph Alvin Provoncha, “Joe”, passed away on June 11, 2025, in Elizabethtown, NY. Joe was the son of Alvin George Provoncha and Shirley Marie (Goodspeed) Provoncha, both of North Hudson, NY. He was born on July 12, 1959, at Moses Ludington Hospital in Ticonderoga, NY by D Philip Sawyer of Schroon Lake.

Joe attended Schroon Lake Central School from Kindergarten through Twelfth grade. He graduated as a member of the National Honor Society with a Regents Diploma and received a Regents Scholarship. He also served as class secretary for three years and helped establish the newly funded elementary library during his senior year. During high school, he made many happy memories working at Frontier Town. After graduation, Joe attended the College of St. Rose, where he earned honors in the field of education.

After college, Joe began his career as an educator at St. James Institute, teaching 4th grade before transitioning to Junior High English and Reading. Though he eventually left the classroom, Joe never stopped being a teacher to those around him. His quiet wisdom, natural compassion, and unwavering support guided and inspired others throughout his life.

Joe later returned to his beloved North Hudson and Essex County, where joined the County Youth Bureau---first as programs coordinator, then as director---always driven by his desire to serve and uplift young people in his community.

In 1991, Joe threw his hat into the political ring for Essex County Clerk, a role he would hold with distinction for thirty years. During that time, he established two additional Motor Vehicle Offices, digitized countless records to preserve them and improve accessibility, and modernized the pistol permit process. His innovative thinking even helped reduce the County’s debt. For these achievements, Joe was recognized with the prestigious Clerk of the Year Award and received the Lifetime Achievement Award twice. He served as secretary of the New York State Association of County Clerks for many years, ultimately rising to President and later returning to his role as secretary. Upon his retirement, he was honored with the Association’s first—ever “Lifetime County Clerks” designation----a reflection of the lasting mark he left on the profession.

Joe was also a passionate supporter of public libraries, serving on the Schroon Lake Public Library Board of Trustees as both Vice President and President.

A lifelong member of Our Lady of Lourdes Roman Catholic Church, Joe’s faith was central to his life. He became an altar server in the fifth grade and continued to serve the church in countless ways over the years---as a Catechism teacher, lector, Parish Council member, Trustee, Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion, and Master of Ceremonies for local clergy. With his family, he helped set up the Church of Jesus and Mary for Memorial Day services and filled in for the Oligants when needed. On December 8, 2013, Bishop Terry LaValley awarded Joe the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Cross----/the highest honor a layperson can receive for service to the Church.

Joe was a member of the Knights of Columbus---3rd Degree in Port Henry and 4th Degree in Ticonderoga----and served as Chaplain of the North Hudson Fire Department. Locally, he also held roles as a temporary board member, Town Clerk, and Deputy Town Supervisor of North Hudson.

Joe was also a devoted uncle who gave generously of his time, energy, and heart to his nieces and nephew. He played an active role in their upbringing, education, and faith, and remained a steady, loving presence. He is remembered for his kindness, guidance, and thoughtful way of making everyday moments meaningful. Joe had a quiet strength and a gift for making people feel valued. Whether through a heartfelt conversation, a small gesture of encouragement, or simply by showing up. Joe changed lives. He led not for recognition, but out of love and purpose. To know Joe was to feel supported, respected, and deeply cared for.Joe was deeply loved by all who knew him. His legacy is one of selflessness and quiet leadership. Deep faith, and enduring service. His absence leaves a profound void, but his impact on countless lives will be felt for generations.

Joe is survived by his loving parents, his sister and brother-in-law, Amy and Thomas Garcia: his precious nieces and nephew, Mary and Logan Quinn, Sarah and Jason Marks, and Thomas Joseph Garcia   (TJ): and his beloved great-nieces and nephews, Clarah Marie Quinn, Alvin Thomas Quinn, Finn Henry Quinn, Skyla D., and Molly Marks. His Aunt Fran Provancha (wife of the late Paul Provoncha) also survived him. Aunt Pam Goodspeed, many treasured cousins, numerous godchildren, and his confirmands: Tanner Stone, William Lowe, and Christopher Veverka. Joe is also remembered with love by his countless friends, colleagues, and community members whose lives he touched with his kindness, faith and quiet leadership.
