Marietta Marguerite DuPont Alitz, affectionately known as Maggie, passed away peacefully from a long illness on January 28, 2025, in Newcomb, New York, with her beloved husband, Doug Alitz, and cherished brother, Joe DuPont, by her side. Born on November 12, 1941, to James and Violetta DuPont of Chatham Township and Watchung, New Jersey, Maggie lived a life rich in faith, love, adventure and creativity.
Maggie’s life was a tapestry of vibrant experiences invigorated by her Dupont heritage. From childhood adventures searching for Indian heads or sailing on an old schooner with her father and her siblings to enjoying Easter brunch with her family at the Nixon White House, her life was filled with remarkable moments. She climbed the steps of Aztec pyramids, volunteered at Mexican orphanages, trekked the ancient Inca ruins of Machu Picchu, flew over and camped at Angel Falls, and explored the Brazilian rainforest in search of rare orchids. Despite these amazing adventures, she humorously claimed that her greatest achievement was getting banned from Facebook from time to time.
In her later years, Maggie and Doug settled in the quintessential American small-town community of Newcomb, New York, where they established and operated Aunt Polly’s Bed and Breakfast and Aunt Polly’s Material Girls. They also managed High Peaks Stables, running horse teams into the Great Camp Santanoni. Maggie was renowned for her culinary creativity as well as her talents in stained glass, sewing, knitting, and quilting. Her artistic vision inspired many to pursue their creative passions.
Maggie was predeceased by three of her siblings, Richard, Robert, and Claudette, and is survived by her brother, Joseph. Maggie is also survived by her husband, Doug, and her children, Rob Sansone (Debbie) and Carly Thorne, her step-children, Scott Alitz (Mary), Karen Alitz and Katie Connelly (Keith) and thirteen grandchildren, Dylan, Sebastian, Sophie, Jacob, Joseph, Sarah (Brendan), John, Cassidy, Griffin, Piper, Kelsey, Kyle and Korey.
Maggie’s life is a testament to the joy of living fully and creatively. Her spirit will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Maggie’s family would like to express their profound gratitude to all those who made her last days as comfortable as possible. Special thanks are given to Norma Taylor for her unrelenting, daily care over the past fifteen months and to the assistance of Kim and Donna. The support provided by the High Peaks Hospice team was also invaluable, including that of Heather, Lauren, Melanie, Sue, Colleen and Kirsten, as was the spiritual guidance of Pastor Andy McCutcheon. Finally, Maggie’s family would like to thank every member of the Newcomb community who combined to make her life in the Adirondacks the best years of her life.
